Soap making is fun and exciting!  In only a few hours you’ll be holding your first bar of soap!

The 5 simple steps to making melt and pour soap are 1 weigh, 2 ) cut, 3) melt, 4) mix, and 5) pour.

STEP 1- Weigh: Weigh the amount of soap needed to fill your mold. If the mold makes three 4-ounce bars, you’ll need 12 ounces of soap. If you’re using a tray mold that makes twelve 1.5-ounce bars of soap, you’ll need 18 ounces.

STEP 2 - Cut: Cut the soap into small squares about the size of sugar cubes. Although soap will melt in larger blocks, using cube-size pieces ensures that the soap will melt as quickly and evenly as possible.

STEP 3 - Melt: Place the soap in a glass container and melt it in the microwave.  A glass measuring cup works the best.  When the soap is hot, the glass may become extremely hot. The handle on the measuring cup will save your fingers. If necessary, remove the soap from the microwave, stir it, and continue heating. A normal 4-ounce bar of soap usually melts in 30 to 45 seconds.  DO NOT OVERHEAT THE SOAP.  If the soap begins to bubble, remove it from the microwave immediately.

STEP 4A – Add Fragrance: Add your fragrance oil and color to the melted soap.  Most fragrance oils can be added up to 5% of the total soap weight.  When making soap, if you don’t already know the metric system you’ll learn it rather quickly.  Fragrance oils are normally best measured in milliliters.  If you have 16 ounces of soap and are adding 5% fragrance, 16 times .05 is 0.8 ounces.  There are 30 milliliters in an ounce.  Multiply the ounces times 30 milliliters to determine the appropriate amount of fragrance oil. 0.8 ounces times 30 = 24 milliliters.  Our droppers are marked in milliliters and hold up to 3.5 mL.  The required 24 milliliters of fragrance would be 6 full droppers (6 droppers full x 3.5 mL per dropper = 21 mL) plus 3 mL.

STEP 4B – Add Color: A little soap color goes a long way. Add one or two drops of color then thoroughly blend it into the soap.  If the color is too light you can always add more color. If you use too much color to begin with, you won’t be able to remove it.

STEP 5: Now that your soap is scented and colored, pour it into the mold. You may notice tiny air bubbles on the top of your soap.  Don't despair! Spray the bubbles with a light mist of alcohol. It will quickly remove those pesky bubbles and leave you with a perfect bar of soap!

If you’re anxious to see what your soap looks like, you can place the mold in the freezer. For a more natural result, let the soap harden at room temperature.  Most soaps are hard enough to unmold within 12 hours but bases containing high levels of coconut oil may require up to 24 hours to completely harden.

Congratulations!  You just made your first perfect bar of soap!!!
